Syllabus for Biology

Biology 2020-2021

Biology is the study of living organisms, their origins, how they survive, reproduce, change over time, and interact with each other and their environments. The Biology curriculum is an introductory course taught in two semesters of high school.  The primary objective of the course is to provide students with a fundamental understanding of modern biology and scientific processes.

FIRST NINE WEEKS GRADING PERIOD- 36 days



Students will learn:

  • Processes of Investigations/Safety

  • Ecosystems

  • Animal Systems

  • Plants System 



SECOND NINE WEEKS GRADING PERIOD- 41 days



Students will learn:

  • Evolution

  • Taxonomy

  • Cell Structure 



THIRD NINE WEEKS GRADING PERIOD - 45 DAYS


Students will learn

  • Cell cycle

  • Cell Processes for Homeostasis

  • Cellular Processes for Energy 



FOURTH NINE WEEKS GRADING PERIOD - 45 DAYS



Students will learn:

  • Nucleic Acids and Protein Synthesis

  • Genetics








CLASS RULES AND INFORMATION 


1. To Maintain a learning environment,  PLEASE 

  • Be prepared – by having supplies, homework, classwork etc 

  • Be promptbe seated before the bell rings, turning in assignments , transitioning between activities

  • Be respectful to others  as well as classroom equipment

  • Be attentive  - your space, your belongings, my belongings, restroom/water needs etc

  • Be Electronic mindful– Students are not allowed to have their cell phones out during class unless a specific assignment from me is given If a student is caught with their cell phone out during class, it will be taken up by the teacher, and turned in to the office to be handled according to district policy.  (See school handbook for specifics on the policy.)

3. It is the student's responsibility to make up any work which is missed due to an excused absence.   Students missing class due to extracurricular activities are expected to make  arrangements in advance to ensure assignments are submitted on the designated day. Extended absences (more than one class session)  will be dealt with on an individual  basis.  Please arrange to visit with me after school.

Individual help is available from 7:30-7:50 every morning, during flex or after school, but please let me know you will be coming in.  I want  to help you do your best!

ades will be averaged on the following basis:

 A.   Daily Work - Classwork and homework . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10% 
         
B.   Lab/Quizzes/Informal projects   …………………………………...30%

                 Labs most likely at the beginning of the school year will be done by demonstration nd / virtual. Later to be determined .  Quizzes will be given periodically - some will be announced, and some will not.  Informal Projects will also be assigned.  One of  these grades will be dropped at the end of the 9 week grading period.    
              C. 
Major Test/Major Project.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 60%

One major test per 3 weeks.  3 per 9 weeks.  Any Test grade below a 70 can be made up in regular Biology (not PAP)  within two days of the test given.  This will NOT be  the  same test. Virtual Test will be given at the designated time of actual 

class and will be timed accordingly.

6.         Please know that it is my goal to teach each student as much as possible during this chool year.  This can only be attained if we work together and each put forth our best efforts. If at any time I can be of help to you or answer any question, please let me know.  To assist in classroom management, the following will be used
